Self Study
February 2025
The Sanskrit word Svadhyaya embodies the practice of self-study—one of yoga’s practices that can take place on or off the mat. It involves expanding our knowledge of ourselves through reading, reflection, and/or meditation as we seek to understand who we truly are beyond the roles we play: parent, child, sibling, doctor, lawyer, teacher, manager….
When we strip away these labels, who remains?
The answer lies in self-awareness. Svadhyaya invites us to turn inward and honor our most authentic selves.
To cultivate Svadhyaya in this moment, place your hands on your heart and ask: How do I feel? What do I truly want?
This inward reflection exists only in the present moment. It can take place on our mat or any other place in our daily life. It’s a regular check in that teaches us and nourishes us from within, freeing us from the need to seek fulfillment from an outside source.
As we deepen our Svadhyaya, our self-study, we begin to understand the layers of our experience. We are able to discern our thoughts, emotions, and the stories we tell ourselves. In this way, every moment becomes an opportunity for transformation.
May you continually deepen your self study throughout the month with loving kindness and compassion.
With gratitude and peace,
